New Outdoor Sporting Facilities in the Amman Valley

After months of construction work, the new outdoor facilities at Amman Valley Leisure Centre / Ysgol Dyffryn Aman officially opened on Friday 10th November.

‌More than 200 Year 6 pupils from ten of the area’s local schools attended a primary school sporting festival in the morning, with a variety of sports taking place including football, rugby, athletics, hockey and netball.

‌At the grand opening ceremony at lunchtime, Ian Jones (Carmarthenshire County Council’s Head of Leisure), Cllr Hazel Evans (Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism) and James Durbridge (Headteacher at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman) addressed guests, VIP's and pupils in Ammanford.

Pupils at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman Comprehensive got the opportunity to use the new facilities during physical education lesson.

E‌x-pupils and sport stars Jac Morgan - Wales Rugby, Hannah Jones - Wales Rugby, Josh Griffiths – Elite Marathon Runner and Shane Williams – Welsh Rugby legend were in attendance inspiring the next generation.

As part of its continued investment into the Amman Valley Leisure Centre & Ysgol Dyffryn Aman facilities, Carmarthenshire County Council was pleased to announce the completion of resurfacing works to the existing 2G Hockey and Football floodlit all-weather pitch (AWP) ahead of the £2 million construction of a brand-new 3G Rugby and Football AWP pitch and 6-lane synthetic running track.

The resurfacing of the existing AWP was made possible through a combination of school, local authority, and external funding of over £300,000 and was part of the second phase of works and investments being undertaken at the site.

In phase 1, Amman Valley Leisure Centre also saw a half-a million-pound investment with a major refurbishment of the changing facilities to a modern changing village, to serve wet and dry side activities.

Cllr. Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “We are delighted to officially open the new 3G sports pitch and running track at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman which will ensure a first-class sport facility for the whole of the Amman Valley.

“This investment in the Amman Valley is all-important in developing the Council’s sport for all approach to support a broad range of participation in sports, from beginners to elite.”
